STFC Advanced Summer School in Solar Physics 2008

Queen's University Belfast will host the annual STFC Advanced Summer School in Solar Physics from Sunday 31st August to Friday 5th September 2008. The aim of the ASSSP is to provide PhD students and PDRAs with a firm grounding in various aspects of solar physics, with talks from subject experts in the UK solar physics community. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to make short presentations on their own work.

You can download a PDF of the course poster to display in your institution.

Course programme

The full course timetable is available in PDF format. Lecture topics include:

  • From the Sun to Earth and beyond
  • Solar structure and evolution
  • Particle acceleration in the corona
  • Waves and instabilities
  • The physics of solar flares
  • Advanced dynamo theory
  • Helio and asteroseismology
  • Magnetic coupling in the solar atmosphere

  • Solar and stellar surface magnetic fields
  • Coronal seismology
  • Magnetic reconnection
  • Ground and space instrumentation and techniques
  • Interpretation of solar spectra
  • Advanced analysis techniques for solar physics
  • Heating considerations: from the photosphere to the solar wind

Location and accommodation

The ASSSP is being hosted by the Astrophysics Research Centre in the School of Maths and Physics at Queen's University Belfast. Some of you will be familiar with the campus having attended NAM2008. If not, we have maps and travel information for your convenience. Lectures will be held in the IRCEP board room within the main Physics and Astronomy building, which has a full range of AV presentation facilities.

Accommodation has been booked in the Queen's Elms Village, the student halls of residence. When your registration for the ASSSP is accepted we will automatically reserve a place in the Elms for you.

Breakfast will be provided each morning at the Elms Village - lunch and dinner will take place at various venues around the campus. Please let us know of any particular dietary requirements when registering.

Course fees

The registration fee for the ASSSP is £350 for the week. The fee includes accommodation, all meals and refreshments, and the reception.

STFC has provided funding that will cover the costs of 25 postgraduate students. All STFC funded students are eligible for this, including students on grants and Dorothy Hodgkin awards. STFC students may claim their travel expenses directly from STFC.

Non-STFC students and PDRAs are welcome to attend but they will have to pay the registration fees from their own resources. Self-funded students may be eligible for support from the STFC if places remain after all STFC-funded students have been accepted.

We are not in a position to offer any financial support beyond that given by STFC.

For further information, you should email the course director, Dr Mihalis Mathioudakis

Registration

Registration is a two step process. First register your interest using our online form. On that form you are asked specify the details of someone who will provide a supporting reference (eg. your PhD supervisor) - they will be sent an email requesting that they promptly provide the reference using another web form. Applications without a supporting reference will not be considered, and we will not chase them up - it is the responsibility of people who wish to attend to ensure that references are provided on time! You will be notified when a reference is submitted for you.

If you are not an STFC-funded PhD student you should also email the course director, Dr Mihalis Mathioudakis.

Places on the ASSSP are limited to a total of 35 - priority will be given to PhD students, though early registration will also be taken into account.

The deadline for applications (and references) is July 1st - details of acceptance on the ASSSP will be distributed by email on or before July 7th.
