Leaving ARC

Some notes for those leaving for pastures greener...

Email

QUB does not offer email to people who are neither students or staff members. Therefore you should expect that your email account will be disabled within a short time of you leaving. If you have an account on staffmail, you can arrange to have mail forwarded to another address. Contact the Systems Administrator for details.

You will want to unsubscribe from the astro-all mailing list. To do so, send an email to mj-admin@qub.ac.uk with the text unsubscribe astro-all in the body. Acknowledgement of your unsubscribing will arrive within a few minutes.

Scratch/Home disks

Upon leaving you should have cleaned out your scratch disk - it is likely that your machine will be removed from the LAN and/or reconfigured once you leave. It is your responsibility to make copies of any data you want to bring with you. If someone remaining in ARC wishes to keep copies of data on your scratch disk, it is up to them to make copies before you leave.

On request your account can be kept open for remote (SSH) access, with a nominal (few hundred MB) home area on star. Ask the Systems Administrator for information.

Laptops, and PCs/peripherals at your home

If you have a laptop computer and/or a PC at home, which were purchased from Group funds, these must be returned to Robert Ryans for re-allocation to other Division members. QUB has an inventory of all our computer equipment, and we must be able to account for this at all times - and produce it if necessary for audit purposes. Hence we cannot let anyone take a laptop or PC when they leave the Division.

Cleaning out your office

You also need to clean out your desks, filing cabinets and shelves. Any papers, notebooks, copies of data etc you do not want to take with you, should be left with your supervisor/line manager. These items MUST NOT be left in the office - it simply isn't fair on the next person moving in to have the office cluttered with the leftovers of the previous occupant.

When a person leaves, a 'sweep' of the office will be carried out and all their remaining material will be dumped. Please warn your supervisor/line manager of this - if they wish to keep any of your material, they must do so in their own office. Any complaints that important information has been thrown out will receive no sympathy - and probably lots of pointing and laughing.

If books have been bought from Group funds then they are the property of the Group, and should not be removed without the express permission of the relevant supervisor/line manager. This includes conference proceedings.

General useage books such as computer manuals, data compilation texts etc - although perhaps 'assigned' to individuals - are bought for everyone's benefit. Hence these definitely should not be removed from the Group.

Keys

Please return all keys to Ian Salter. If he is not around, leave the keys with me or your supervisor/line manager.
