Reading Microsoft Office Files

Sadly, many important documents are sent as Microsoft Office files - we have several ways of reading these on the ARC Linux machines.

OpenOffice.org

Most documents may be readable in OpenOffice.org, though more complex ones may have rendering errors. To run the program, type soffice in a console window.

CrossOver Office

This is software that lets you run the actual Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applictions directly on your Linux system. We have sufficient licenses for everyone to have a copy of this available to them, so if you are doing a significant bit of work with MS applictions this may be a good solution for you. Contact the systems administrator to arrange for it to be installed. There are a few problems with it, but mostly it seems to be stable and reliable. It can support Office 2000 (the default) as well as Office XP.

Windows PC

There is a PC running in the Coffee Room which has the latest Office XP on it. Ask the systems administrator for an account on this machine if you want to use it. Through the use of SAMBA software, it is possible to directly access your home and scratch disks from this PC so you can easily get at your files. This PC also has an inkjet printer and scanner attached to it. The PC also has a CD-R drive, which can be used, for example, to write copies of presentations that are being taken to conferences.
