PrintersWe have a lot of printers in the group! Print queue names
We have a simple naming convention for our printers. Those in staff rooms are named after the staff member (eg. ps_fpk), while those in PDRA/PhD rooms are named after the room number (eg. ps_f044). Here is a list of all current printers, along with their IP addresses for users who need to setup a laptop or other machine for JetDirect printing (port 9100) under Windows, OS X, or Linux.
Colour LaserJet 2550N
This is a full-colour A4 laser printer - pscol1 - and can be used to print overheads as well as on plain paper. Information on loading special media into this printer may be found here. When printing overhead transparencies the special "Colour LaserJet" transparancies must be used.
Printer options
All computers now use the CUPS (Common Unix Print System), which has many advantages in ease of printer setup, espeically from CUPS-aware software such as KDE. However it is possible to set many options from the command line (using lp/lpr) using the -o switch. Full details of all the options are given on this page (accessible only from a machine running CUPS).
Using the printers
The interface to the printers is via the lp/lpr set of commands, which allow you to send postscript files to a designated printer. To list all jobs you have submitted to a given printer use lpq -P printername. Cancel a job using lprm -P printername job_number.
Note that they are all configured as Postscript only, so trying to print non-postscript files will probably not do what you want it to. You may find the a2ps program useful for converting many types of file (not just ASCII) to postscript.
To set a default printer for your system, add the line setenv PRINTER queue_name in your .login file.
