Summer Placement at Andor Technology and/or QUB

Camera sensors are universally used across nearly every discipline within industry and science. From CoVID-19 testing and research to astronomers discovering new planets around distant stars. The infrared wavelength regime in particular offers many advantages compared to the visible. Infrared astronomy allows us to probe through interstellar dust, estimate the temperature of very cool objects and determine weak magnetic fields with high polarimetric sensitivity. In medical research, it is used to probe deeper into tissue samples with greater accuracy. Industrial applications of infrared imaging focus on the detection of defects in everything from apples to silicon wafer growth.

The long-term aim of this project is to investigate the development, qualify, and optimise new infrared detectors to allow scientific researchers to explore a new dimension of their science in this vastly growing field. The successful candidate will work with a team of scientists and engineers on the topic of infrared sensor technology. The work will be undertaken as a partnership between Queen's University Belfast and Andor Technology. Andor Technology are a world leading developer for scientific research detectors, having originally spun-out of QUB.

This paid summer placement would be suitable for a student that is currently in the level 4 MSci class and is expected to graduate in July 2021. The placement will be undertaken over a period of 3 months in the June – October 2021 interval.

Location: Andor Technology and/or QUB

It is desirable that the candidate has some experience and/or understanding in one or more of the following areas:

  • Software development (C/Python preferred)
  • A good understanding of solid state physical science
  • A good understanding optical physics knowledge
  • Electronic experience (preferred)

Interested applicants should submit a brief statement of interest (max 1 A4 page) and a copy of their transcript to: M.Mathioudakis@qub.ac.uk

Deadline: 4pm December 16 2020

Additional information can be obtained from: M.Mathioudakis@qub.ac.uk (Mihalis Mathioudakis) or a.reid@andor.com (Aaron Reid)
