ARC staff have been talking to national and local news outlets today about the meteor crash in Russia and the passing of Asteroid 2012 DA14. For some footage of the event see these jaw-dropping clips.
Professor Alan Fitzsimmons was interviewed by BBC News about Asteroid 2012 DA14 which will today pass at a distance closer to the earth than has ever been recorded before in an asteroid of similar size. Read the full article on the BBC News website. Professor Fitzsimmons was also quoted by BBC in two related articles: Asteroid, Russian meteor: Can we know about every space rock? and Meteorites injure hundreds in central Russia.
Later today Dr Pedro Laderda will be featuring on Northern Ireland's Downtown Radio to talk about the spectacular meteor crash in Russia which injured up to 400 people in the Chelyabinsk region. Pedro will be on Caroline Fleck's show around lunchtime. You can listen in on FM radio on 96.4-96.6 or online.
Coincidentally, Dr Robert Ryans was giving his talk on Science Fiction weapons to a class of A-Level Physics students at St Patricks Grammar, Downpatrick, and had the opportunity to include the breaking news as part of his examples of kinetic weapons!
