During the first week of September, the Astrophysics Research Centre in the School of Mathematics and Physics hosted a Summer School for postgraduate research students on the topic of atomic processes and spectral modelling in astrophysics. The School was primarily funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council under its Summer School programme, and was also sponsored by AWE Aldermaston and the US Air Force.
Close to 50 students attended the School, from as far afield as Canada and Slovenia, as well as representatives from most of the major UK universities, including Cambridge and Imperial College London. Lectures at the School were delivered by world-leaders in their research fields, such as Professor Andy Fabian FRS (Cambridge University), Professor Juliet Pickering (Imperial) and Professor Gary Ferland (University of Kentucky).
Summer School Director Prof Francis Keenan said, ‘The support provided by STFC for this Summer School, and its popularity among students, demonstrates once again the high regard in which astrophysics at Queen’s is held. The students and lecturers were also very impressed with Queen’s, in particular the excellent accommodation provided at Queen’s Elms Village’.
