ARC Summer Studentships 2015

The QUB Astrophysics Research Centre is offering a small number of summer internship positions to work on research projects with members of the group. The goal of this scheme is to allow undergraduate students to gain some experience of working on a research project, which will be of particular value to those who are considering applying for a PhD degree program in the coming year.

This studentship program is open to undergraduate students who are studying for physics or astronomy degrees at any UK university. Preference will be given to those who have already completed three years of study of a four-year degree course (i.e. will be starting their final year after the summer), although students who have completed two years of a four-year degree will also be considered.

Proposed project overviews

Follow the links below to find details of potential summer projects:

For further information about a project, please contact the project supervisor (e-mail address provided on project page).

Note for QUB applicants: Students who are accepted onto the summer studentship programme will not be disadvantaged when it comes to selecting an MSci Level 4 project in astrophysics (or any other topic) at QUB in their final year. Of course, a student cannot do the same specific project for their MSci project module (PHY4030) as they did for the summer project. However all the projects above have been designed to be self-contained summer projects, and other MSci topics will be provided. Any student doing both a summer project and MSci Level 4 project will get experience in two different areas of astrophysics.

Timing and duration

The studentships are expected to last for 8 weeks. Projects should be completed outside the QUB teaching term (i.e. start after 8th June 2014 and finish before 21st September 2015) - specific start and end dates are to be agreed by mutual consent between the student and the supervisor(s). It will be a condition on any offered studentship that mutually convenient dates are agreed.

Student support

A modest stipend (£1200) will be offered by the ARC to each student to help cover living expenses.

How to apply

Applications for 2015 are now closed.

Closing date and selection

All applications received before the closing date of Fri 15th of May 2015 will receive equal consideration. Late applications may still be considered if studentships remain unfilled.

Selection of students will be based on academic excellence with priority given to students who will benefit from gaining research experience before applying to an astrophysics PhD program. Accordingly, preference will be given to undergraduates about to start their final year of a UK MSci/MPhys program (although applications will be considered from students who have completed at least two years of such a degree course).
