The 5th SOLARNET summer school and workshop

Queen's University Belfast will host the 5th SOLARNET summer school and workshop from the 25th of August to the 2nd of September 2016. The school will run from Thursday the 25th of August to Tuesday the 30th inclusive. The workshop will run from Wednesday the 31st of August until lunchtime on Friday the 2nd of September. The school will provide students and early-career researchers with a solid foundation in a range of topics related to the theme of Waves and Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere. The primary topics covered in the summer school therefore are:

  • MHD waves and instabilities throughout the atmosphere
  • Observations and techniques
  • MHD Simulations
  • Helioseismology

The summer school is followed by the 5th SOLARNET workshop, on "Heating in the Solar Atmosphere".


Registration for both the summer school and workshop can be completed using our online store. There is a charge of £60 per person for the summer school, and £40 per person for the workshop. Due to space limitations numbers will be capped for both events - 25 for the summer school and 60 for the workshop. The deadline for registration is 15th July, 2016.

Abstract submission

Abstracts for the workshop may be submitted by email to solarnet5@qub.ac.uk The deadline for submissions is 30th July, 2016.

Student support

Students wishing to apply for support to attend the summer school should email a CV and a brief motivation letter (1 A4 page max) outlining what they expect to gain from the school to solarnet5@qub.ac.uk by 30th June 2016.

Successful applicants will be judged based on their research field and the relevance of the school to their PhD research. All applicants will be notified of the success of their application by 7th July 2016.

Students are also encouraged to attend and submit abstracts for the subsequent workshop on heating in the solar atmosphere.


The programme will be announced by mid June 2016.

As well as the invited talks, we invite submissions to present contributed talks and e-posters. No paper posters will be accepted.

Lecture Topics


Both summer school and workshop will be hosted at Queen's University Belfast, in the Lanyon Building (map point 1). Students attending the summer school will be accommodated in the University Halls of Residence which are a 10-15 minute walk from the QUB main site.

How to get to Belfast, Northern Ireland

Belfast is served by 2 airports.

  • George Best Belfast City Airport is approximately 3.5 miles from QUB. The City Airport has frequent services to London Heathrow (British Airways and Aer Lingus) and many other UK destinations (flybe). A frequent bus service connects the City Airport with Belfast City Centre. A taxi fare from the City Airport to QUB costs approximately £10.
  • Belfast International Airport is approximately 20 miles from Belfast. A frequent shuttle service connects Belfast International with Belfast City Centre. Belfast International has flights to/from several UK and European destinations as well as a daily non-stop flight to Newark (United). A taxi fare from the City Airport to QUB costs approximately £30.

Belfast can also be reached from Dublin.

  • Dublin Airport is approximately 100 miles south of Belfast and is well connected to many European and US destinations.
  • Ulsterbus and Aircoach connect Dublin airport to Belfast City Centre. The buses run every hour and the journey lasts approximately 2 hours.
